WHO WE ARE

Highlands Architecture is a modest, yet highly motivated and proficient architectural practice founded by Justin R. Kacur in 2008.

Justin R. Kacur, Architect (AIA, LEED-AP)

Justin Kacur is an accomplished and versatile Architect who possesses the instincts of a carpenter and a passion for building. He recalls the days as a child watching his carpenter father draw details on pieces of lumber prior to executing the work with the utmost care and skillful craftsmanship. These memories had a profound impact on Justin at a young age and have influenced his life’s work. Along with the sights and smells of lumber, earth and concrete on the jobsite, these are what drive him to continue improving and honing his profession each and every day. He has an exceptional work ethic, great people skills and brings an enthusiastic passion to every project.

Justin graduated with highest honors from Pratt Institute School of Architecture, Brooklyn, NY campus in 1994 and achieved his architectural license in 2002. He is currently licensed in New York State and Connecticut. Justin has been employed in the architectural and construction industry since 1988 when he began working for a local lumber and building materials supply company whereby he obtained an intimate, hands-on knowledge of building materials and systems. Justin has worked with a few notable Hudson Valley Architects over the years of whom he respectfully nods in great appreciation for the opportunities and experiences they provided him over the years. He still keeps in touch with many of his former colleagues, many of whom have become lifelong friends.

Outside of work, Justin enjoys spending time with his family, riding motorcycles, skiing and exploring the natural world. He also spends many hours as a ‘weekend warrior’ working on improving and expanding his modest home in the Hamlet of Glenham, NY.

Our portfolio of work encompasses a wide range of building types and architectural “styles” which are reflective of our clients, site opportunities, material selections and many other factors that contribute to exceptional design. Our work is respectful of local vernacular and context while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of modern design, construction methods, sustainability, energy efficiency and various other emerging building science technologies.
Simply stated, our work can be described as a pluralism of “styles” as our vision is adapted to each individual client, project and site which are never the same. We do not limit ourselves to an umbrella of stylistic guidelines unless it pertains to restoration or preservation projects in historic districts. Some might call it eclectic; but we simply prefer to focus on the importance of program, proportion, scale, rhythm, orientation, sustainability and materials. Solutions are tailored to the job.
While the majority of our projects are located in the greater Hudson Valley region of New York State; we welcome the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects throughout the United States and abroad.
